Todo el universo ha sabido, hasta hoy, que, desde tiempo inmemorial, Salomón estaba en posesión de todas las ciencias infundidas a través de los sabios preceptos y de las enseñanzas de un ángel, al cual pareció estar tan sumiso y obediente que, además del don de sabiduría que le pidiera, obtuvo, y no sin admiración, toda otra suerte de virtudes.

Los Rabinos que, después de él, procuraron guardar celosamente este testamento, nombraron a éste último Las Clavículas de Salomón, nombre con el cual hicieron grabar un libro hecho de cortezas dé cedro, y en donde los pantáculos aparecían en caracteres hebreos y sobre planchas de cobre, a fin de poder ser conservados para la posteridad en el templo que el sabio había hecho construir. Ellos, los Rabinos, han añadido a este precioso tesoro muchas pruebas o demostraciones de los secretos que adquirieron a través del mismo; antiguamente fue traducido del hebreo al latín por el rabino Hebognazar, quien llevose consigo tal traducción, yendo a parar a Arlés (Provenza), donde, gracias a la fortuna, esta preciosa traducción fue a caer en manos de Monseigneur de Darvault, quien la rescató, en aquel tiempo, de entre el exterminio que de los judíos produjérase. Darvault la tradujo del latín al lenguaje vulgar (francés) en los términos siguientes:  Roboam, hijo mío, como de entre todas las ciencias, no las hay más naturales y más útiles que las del conocimiento de los movimientos celestes, he creído que, cuando yo muera, debo dejarte una herencia más preciosa que todas las riquezas de las que gozo.

Héte aquí, hijo mío, como, por ese medio, poseo todas las virtudes y riquezas de las que tú me ves disfrutar ahora; y, si pones un poco de atención en lo que voy a contarte, y si observas y guardas con cuidado los preceptos que voy a darte, te garantizo que las gracias del gran Dios te serán familiares, y que las criaturas celestes y terrenas serán obedientes y estarán sujetas a ti por la fuerza y virtud de la Ciencia Cabalística, a la que yo llamo Gran Ciencia o Magia, la cual difiere de la Ciencia Diabólica, es decir, que no opera en absoluto a través de la fuerza de los espíritus inmundos, aunque sí por la potencia de las causas naturales y la de los ángeles puros que las rigen. De los que voy a darte los nombres ordenados, y sus ejercicios y empleos especificos, a los cuales son destinados con sus nombres, sellos y caracteres; reúne los días durante los cuales presiden en particular, a fin de que puedas llevar a cabo todo cuanto te prometo en este mi testamento.

Es preciso que seas cuidadoso y estés atento a la consecución de lo que desees emprender, y que todas tus obras vayan dirigidas sola y exclusivamente a honor del que me ha dado el conocimiento y la fuerza de dominar, no solamente sobre las cosas terrenas, si no también sobre las celestes, es decir, sobre los ángeles de quienes pudo disponer a voluntad mía y obtener de ellos servicios muy considerables en todo cuanto me concierne.

Ante todo debo procurar que sepas que Dios, habiendo hecho todas las cosas para que le estén sumisas, y no contento todavía, ha querido llevar sus obras hasta el grado más perfecto, haciendo una obra en la que participan lo divino y lo terrenal, es decir, el hombre cuyo cuerpo es grosero y terreno y el alma espiritual y celestial, al cual ha sometido toda la tierra y a sus habitantes, y le ha dado medios por los cuales, con el arte, puede volver familiares a los ángeles, a los que yo llamo criaturas celestiales, que están destinados, unos a regular el movimiento de los astros, otros a habitar dentro de los elementos, y otros, en fin, a conducir y ayudar a las criaturas celestiales y terrenales, a las que llamo hombres. Puedes, pues, entablar conocimiento con una gran parte de ellos a través de sus sellos y caracteres, y que se te vuelvan fáciles y familiares mientras no abuses exigiendo dos de las cosas que a ellos les son contrarias, a saber:

Maldito quien en vano tomará el Nombre de Dios y maldito quien mal empleará las Ciencias y los bienes con los que El nos ha enriquecido.  Te pido, hijo mío, que grabes bien en tu memoria todo cuanto te digo, para que no se te borre nunca, o, por lo menos, te mando que si no tuvieses deseo de usar para bien los secretos que te enseño, antes eches al fuego este mi testamento, que abusar del poder que te doy de obligar a los espíritus, pues te advierto que estos ángeles bienhechores, cansados de tus ilícitas demandas, podrían ejecutar para tu desdicha las órdenes del Dios supremo, así corno para la desdicha de todos los que, mal intencionados, abusaren de los Secretos que se me han revelado. De todas formas, hijo mío, no creas en absoluto que no te sea permitido gozar de los bienes y placer que esos espíritus divinos puedan darte; sino al contrario, para ellos es un gran placer el rendir servicio al hombre, mientras éste no abuse en absoluto de su bondad. Por otra parte, hay muchos de esos espíritus que tienen mucha afinidad con el hombre e inclinación hacia él, al haberles destinado Dios sobre todo a la conservación y conducción de las cosas terrenas que están sometidas al poder del hombre.

Hay diferentes clases de espíritus, según las cosas a las cuales presiden: los hay que rigen el cielo empíreo, otros que rigen el primer móvil, otros el segundo Cristalino, otros el primer Cristalino; los hay que presiden el Cielo estrellado, hay también espíritus en el Cielo de Saturno, a los que se llaman saturnistas, hay espíritus jupiterianos, marciales, solares, venusianos, mercuriales y luminares; obser­vo los mismos espíritus en los Elementos como en los Cielos. Los hay que habitan la región ígnea, los hay que residen en el aire, otros en el agua y otros en la tierra; todos ellos pueden prestar servicio al hombre que tenga la dicha de conocerlos y que pueda servirse de los medios encaminados a sorprenderlos y hallarlos.

 Quiero hacerte saber todavía que Dios ha destinado a cada uno de nosotros un espíritu que vela y cuida de nuestra conservación, los cuales son llamados genios y son elementales al igual que nosotros, y están más prestos en llevar a cabo servicios para los que su temperamento está conforme al Elemento que estos genios habitan; por ejemplo, si tú eres de temperamento ígneo, es decir sanguíneo, tu genio será ígneo y sometido al imperio de Bael. Así, pues, hijo mío, en primer lugar debes saber que para comprender la tabla siguiente, en la cual están grabadas las horas planetarias, es preciso examinár que cada fila es para cada día, y que la parte de arriba de cada una que viene esçrita en cifra y que empieza por 8, son las horas del sol levante y poniente, y que la fila de debajo que empieza por 1, es la hora desde medianoche hasta la medianoche si­guiente, y que lo que está sombreado significa las ho­ras nocturnas.
